Bring Workers Home - 2010 Regional Forum on Workforce Housing (Atlanta)

June 14

Housing Leaders Meet in Atlanta to Discuss Workforce Housing Challenges and Solutions in Southeast

Over 75 national, state and local leaders convened in Atlanta on June 14, 2010 for a Bring Workers Home forum that focused on the growing “cost of place” in the Southeast, and a range of affordable workforce housing solutions that can help make a difference for families and individuals in the region and nationwide. The forum was hosted by NHC in partnership with the National Association of Realtors® (NAR).

The forum included an Atlanta-focused morning panel discussion on how workforce housing matters now more than ever as the total “cost of place,” or the combined costs for housing, utilities and transportation, continues to rise.

Highlighting solutions, keynote speaker Darlene Porter, senior manager at Aflac, detailed the company’s employer-assisted housing benefits program, which provides down payment and closing cost assistance to its employees through a grant program for first-time homebuyers.

The forum closed with two panels that looked at case studies for successful workforce housing programs in Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina and Florida. In particular, both of these panels outlined effective strategies to advance employer-assisted housing through community partnerships.

NHC and NAR were joined by regional and national partners in planning the Bring Workers Home forum in Atlanta. The partners included the Atlanta Board of Realtors®; Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership, Inc.; Atlanta Regional Commission; Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco; International Economic Development Council; Livable Communities Coalition; and the Metropolitan Planning Council.

In addition to Atlanta, 2010 Bring Workers Home forums will be hosted by NHC and NAR in Minneapolis, Austin and Honolulu.
